The idea of sustainability has both economic and ethical connotations. From the former point of view there are both potential costs and benefits to sustaining a resource or asset. For example if one wants to maintain the capital value of a sum in times of inflation it is necessary to add to it part of any investment income or profit. The advantage of this is that a percentage return on a maintained value does not suffer inflationary erosion; on the other hand it limits the available return which may also carry an opportunity cost since that money is not usable for other potentially profitable investments. Analogous points may arise with regard to non-monetary assets such as fertile agricultural land or fish stocks. From an ethical point of view sustainability relates to non-exploitation and non-exhaustion of natural resources ensuring their availability for future peoples which is seen as a matter of inter-generational justice and also of responsible stewardship.
